Obtaining Your Louisiana Temporary Permit

Once you have completed your drivers education course, you will be ready to apply for your Louisiana learner's permit.

Before you can become a fully licensed driver in Louisiana, you'll need a learner's permit. This permit allows you to practice driving as long as you are accompanied by a valid driver over the age of 21. Download this comprehensive Easy Guide™ or read below for more information. 


  • To receive a learner's permit, you must meet the following requirements: 
  • Be a minimum of 15 years old
  • Complete a state-approved driver education course. If you are under the age of 17, you are required to complete a 38 hour course, while drives over the age of 17 need only compelte a six hour course. 
  • Visit your local OMV location with proper documentation, including: 
    • Birth Certificate
    • Social Security number
    • State-issued ID, school ID or other proof of identity
    • Proof of Residence
